The Mena Abarca family are third-generation coffee producers from a small town called León Cortes.
30 years ago, they took over Finca San Francisco - a 2-hectare farm, adding to a total of 3 farms with 7 hectares of coffee cultivation owned by the family.
Thanks to the volcanic soil and microclimate, it has idyllic conditions for growing high-quality lots.
Up until recently, their cherries would be brought to a large, centralised mill to be processed, blended and exported in bulk under a regional brand.
But in 2013, they invested in a small wet mill of their own called La Meca, located 5km from San Francisco.
Now, they are proud to use the close oversight a micro mill provides to prepare coffees to the best standards and experiment
with new varieties and diverse processing techniques to discover greater quality potential.
They also share the mill with neighbouring families to give them access to the premiums that come with micro-lot preparations.
 
The family have been refining their Black Honey Catuaí for many years.
This lot is selected from the highest elevation on the farm, handpicked and depulped to leave 100% mucilage around the parchment.
Drying times are slow on raised beds, requiring constant turning. The results deliver a more concentrated fruit presence in the cup.
An experience that Mena Abarca believes justifies their immense efforts and are up for the ongoing challenges to improve and impress with every new season.
