The Thuti wet mill is located in the heart of Nyeri County in Central Kenya.
It is located around 2km from the Karima Hills, with the River Thuti flowing through the area.
The mill processes cherries from a number of farmers in the surrounding highlands, who transport their harvested coffees to be combined, sorted and processed.
The coffee processed at the Thuti mill is grown between 1800-1900 meters above sea level.
The Thuti mill is part of the Othaya Farmers’ Co-operative Society, an organisation of 19 small wet mills known as ‘factories’.
Registered in 1956 with 250 farms, the society now has over 11,000 member farms. It has a nursery and farm store to supply its members with inputs, equipment and seedlings.
This Society has its own dry mill, located in less than 5km from Rukira in the neighbouring town of Gatuyaini.
With sample roasting and cupping facilities at the Gatuyaini factory, society staff cup samples of every lot delivered during the harvest season.
Farm management workshops are offered regularly, and factory managers are routinely trained on wet mill best practices. After milling is done at Gatutaini, the coffee is packed in export bags.
The Society has a cupping laboratory where quality analysis is done by a qualified cupper before the coffee is taken to the warehouse ready for marketing.
