Background Information
The name "Mil Cumbres" translates to "a thousand hills," perfectly describing the rolling terrain of this coffee farm. Mil Cumbres was once an old cattle pasture before being transformed into a specialty coffee farm. The farm's access was created by reactivating an old timber trail, once used to transport wood out of the forest.
Mil Cumbres is owned by Mario Fonseca and Arturo Klein, with coffee production managed by Ratibor Hartmann. It’s located in Cordillera, near the town of Volcan in the Province of Chiriqui, on the slopes of the Baru Volcano. The farm sits at an elevation between 1,650 and 2,100 metres, offering breathtaking views—on clear days, you can see all the way to the Pacific Ocean.
Out of the 60 hectares of land, only 25 hectares are dedicated to coffee production, while the remaining land is untouched native jungle that forms part of the Baru Volcano National Park. This creates a rich biodiversity that naturally supports the coffee crops. Varieties grown on the farm include Geisha, Pacamara, Mocca, and Bourbon, with new varietals to come.
The volcanic soil and annual rainfall of 3,000 to 6,000 mm provide the perfect conditions for producing exceptional coffee. Coffee farming at Mil Cumbres follows biological methods, focusing on sustainability and limiting chemical use to a bare minimum. Most of the work on the farm is done manually, with biological fertilisers and environmentally friendly practices prioritised over conventional methods.
Enjoy the unique flavours and clean, bright profile of this Mil Cumbres – Geisha, a standout coffee from a farm that is truly kicking goals.
