Mushaka Wetmill sits at 1,800 masl in the Rusizi District of Rwanda’s West Province, close to the scenic shores of Lake Kivu. Founded in 2017 by Beathe Nyirankunzurwanda, the station began with only the most basic equipment and produced just one container of cherries in its first year. With ambition and a sharp learning curve, Beathe quickly expanded operations, producing over three containers by the very next season.
Together with her son, Beathe has steadily reinvested in Mushaka, growing it into a respected producer of specialty coffee. Today, the wetmill partners with local farmers to deliver high-quality, fully washed lots that highlight the clarity and brightness Rwanda is known for.
Processing at Mushaka follows a classic washed method: ripe cherries are pulped using a Penagos pulping machine, fermented dry, and then dried on raised beds for 15–22 days. This approach ensures the coffee retains both structure and vibrancy, bringing a delicate clarity to the final cup.
Mushaka represents both the entrepreneurial spirit of Rwanda’s new generation of coffee producers and the country’s enduring reputation for clean, fruit-driven washed coffees. This lot is a beautiful reminder of why Rwandan coffee continues to captivate.
