About the Producer
Los Nogales is a fifth generation family farm rooted deeply in the coffee history of Huila. Founded by Ricaurte Hernandez and now led by his son Oscar Hernandez, the farm has long been recognised as a pioneer in Colombian specialty coffee. In 2005, Los Nogales made history by winning first place at the inaugural Cup of Excellence in Colombia, a moment that helped redefine the global perception of Colombian coffee.
Oscar Hernandez returned to the family farm after a career in the Colombian Navy, bringing with him a strong focus on sustainability, research, and innovation. Today, Los Nogales operates as both a coffee farm and a research centre, integrating biotechnology, environmental management, and social responsibility into every stage of production. More than 30 local families are supported through employment, training, and long term investment in education and land stewardship.
About This Lot
This Orange Bourbon lot showcases Oscar Hernandez’s meticulous approach to fermentation and washing. Only fully ripe cherries are hand selected before undergoing density sorting and careful cleaning. The coffee then passes through a thermal shock stage, using hot and cold water to precisely control microbial activity and stabilise sugars within the bean.
Following pulping, the coffee is fermented for an extended period under tightly monitored conditions, allowing complex sugars to develop while preserving clarity. The lot is then sun dried slowly over approximately 15 days, ensuring even moisture reduction and a refined final structure.
The result is a coffee that feels layered and indulgent without heaviness. Notes of mulled wine and black plum bring warmth and depth, while Jaffa cake sweetness adds a nostalgic citrus chocolate finish. It’s a beautifully balanced expression of Orange Bourbon and a standout example of modern Colombian washed processing done with intention.
